Nature is both my spiritual home and source of renewal. I work
through the traditions of the landscape genre to express the
many layers of reality and consciousness. Sometimes the
landscape is simply a homage to the extraordinary beauties of
nature, some small moments in a big space. Other times it is a
documentation of nature’s struggle to survive the onslaught of
civilization. Often the landscape refers to the relentless cycle of
seasons that quietly witness our chaotic lives; our private
triumphs and losses. While the human figure is mostly absent in
the spaces, the human impact is always present.
The layers of reality also relate to my painting approach and
interest in process as part of the creative work. I experiment with
various paints, grounds, varnishes and techniques to create
painterly and layered surfaces. This creates tension between
representational space and abstraction- the surface contradicting
more traditional landscape depth. The paintings emerge from
this struggle between the visible and the unseen, honoring nature
as the foundation of all life.
In these troubled times of accelerating change, my paintings
seek to reconnect myself and the viewers with our profound and
reverent connection to the natural world. This renewal of our
ancient awareness is the deepest hope for the continuation of a Wild Earth .
